Free Entry and Decorative Painting at Göteborgskalaset! — Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet, Gothenburg
Free entry

On Saturday, 29 August, Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet offers free admission as part of Göteborgskalaset. Throughout the day, you can explore the museum's exhibitions, visit the aquarium, and participate in workshops and lectures for children and adults - all centred on decorative painting traditions.

Workshops

10.30-11.30 and 13.00-14.00: Workshop - Paint a Decorative Piece with Sea Creatures
Create your own decorative painting using templates featuring sea animal motifs. The workshop is aimed at children aged 8-12 with an accompanying adult and is led by artist Julia Kabell, a creative producer and educator specialising in decorative painting. A collaboration between Bonadsmuseet and Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet.

14.30-16.30: Workshop - Paint a Decorative Piece (for Adults)
Learn about the history and craft of decorative painting: sketch using templates, grind pigments, and paint a story with egg tempera - a paint made from egg yolk and pigments. The inspiration draws from the decorative painting tradition that emigrated across the Atlantic to America. Led by Julia Kabell, in collaboration between Bonadsmuseet and Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet.

Practical information for workshops: Limited spaces available. Collect your ticket at reception no more than 1 hour before the start (all participants need their own ticket).

Lecture

13.00-15.00: Emigrants' Folk Art - Contemporary Decorative Painting in America (held in English)
Dr. Alison Aune, art professor at University of Minnesota Duluth and fourth-generation Swedish-American, presents her interpretations of South Swedish decorative painting, Dala painting, and mixed-media works. She demonstrates how her art honours her Swedish immigrant ancestors and preserves her cultural heritage. Göteborg was once the leading port for Swedish emigrants seeking a new life in America - with them came the decorative painting tradition, which is being rediscovered and reinterpreted by subsequent generations. The lecture is held in English, but certain passages can be explained in Swedish if needed. A collaboration between Bonadsmuseet, University of Minnesota Duluth, and Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet.
