Women and Apple Trees

Two women from Norrköping's working-class neighbourhood - Sally and Ellen - are followed from childhood to adulthood in a dramatization of Moa Martinsson's 1933 novel. Ellen endures a destructive marriage, Sally fights openly and without apology. Around them, children live their daily lives of hardship and brief moments of togetherness.

The novel portrays women's living conditions around the turn of the 20th century in language rooted in labour and survival - and is still read as if written yesterday. The dramatization is by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord.
