The Ark concerts: the glam rock that refuses to die
You don't need to be a die-hard glam rock fan to recognise The Ark. "The Worrying Kind" stuck in the minds of all of Sweden in the spring of 2007, and before that "It Takes a Fool to Remain Sane" had already become one of the most played radio songs around the turn of the millennium. But here's the detail most people miss: the entire band started as a six-line poem. The Ark was formed in the summer of 1991 in Rottne outside Växjö by Ola Salo, who at the age of fourteen, during a family holiday in Ireland, wrote a six-line poem titled The Ark and got the idea to form a band around that concept. Anyone looking for The Ark concerts today is therefore not just encountering a rock band, but a teenage dream that refused to give up.
And the dream certainly holds. After a formal dissolution in 2011 and a reunion in 2020, the band is appearing on Swedish stages again, and the question many are asking is simple: where and when can you see them? This guide takes you through the history, what actually happens on stage and how to find your way among the ticket releases.
The Ark concerts 2026: here's where things stand
The Ark concerts are appearing as the band has become active again following the reunion. Exact dates and venues are released on a rolling basis, so always check the official channels before you book.
The band took a long break and eventually announced that they would go their separate ways. In 2010 The Ark announced that they would split after a farewell tour the following year, and the band's last concert took place in Stockholm in September 2011. That finale became historic: their very last show was held at the amusement park Gröna Lund in Stockholm on 16 September 2011, in front of an audience estimated at around 15,000 people. Then it was almost a decade before anything happened. On 13 February 2020 The Ark announced that they would do a reunion tour in the summer of 2020, starting in Stockholm on 28 June.
That's exactly why it's worth keeping an eye out. If you want to plan ahead you can follow the listings in our events calendar and browse current concerts on a rolling basis, so you don't miss it when a release pops up near you.
From Rottne to Eurovision
The Ark is one of the few Swedish rock acts to have made it all the way from a small town in Småland to the Eurovision stage. The journey there took almost a decade.
With an image built on 70s glam rock costumes and grand gestures, combined with catchy radio-friendly songs, The Ark had their big breakthrough in Sweden in the year 2000, having existed since 1991 when the band was formed by singer Ola Salo, guitarist Jepson, bassist Lasse "Leari" Ljungberg and drummer Olsson. The breakthrough didn't come for free. In 1997 the band was close to splitting but was contacted by Robert Jelinek, who had previously sung in The Creeps, and with his help The Ark got a record deal and was strengthened by Martin Axén on guitar and Sylvester Schlegel on drums.
Once things took off, they moved fast. The single "It Takes a Fool to Remain Sane" was released on 15 May and became a massive radio hit with a music video that played frequently on music channels. The debut album broke through on a broad front: the album We Are The Ark was released on 25 September and sold 120,000 copies, making it one of the most successful debut albums in Swedish history.
Then the Swedish public got to know them properly. On 10 March 2007 Salo and The Ark won Melodifestivalen and represented Sweden in the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "The Worrying Kind", where they finished in eighteenth place with 51 points. Back home in Sweden the song was far stronger. "The Worrying Kind" debuted at number one on the Swedish singles chart on 15 March 2007 and held the position for three weeks. Over time their status grew into something unusual: The Ark won a large number of awards during their twenty years and were celebrated as the most successful Swedish band since ABBA.
What to expect on stage
A The Ark concert is as much about show as it is about music. Glitter, costumes and a frontman who takes up space are the whole point.
The visual element is no afterthought but the core of the entire expression. The visual aesthetic draws heavily from 70s glam rock, with band members in make-up, glitter, eyeliner and platform shoes that conjure a psychedelic and androgynous world in the spirit of David Bowie. Anyone who has seen the band knows that Ola Salo carries the show. The Ark's live performances are built on theatrical, high-energy delivery with Salo's flamboyant stage presence at the centre, something that has often been likened to Freddie Mercury for the charisma and vocal power.
But it's not just fireworks. The band can scale things down when needed, and the shift between grand and intimate is part of the charm. The influences can be heard straight through: the band is deeply rooted in the tradition of David Bowie, T-Rex and Roxy Music. The songs that carry a concert
The setlist rests on an unusually deep catalogue of hits for a Swedish rock band. Here are the songs an audience waits for.
The backbone is of course the breakthrough songs. "It Takes a Fool to Remain Sane" and "The Worrying Kind" are the two that even the most casual listener recognises, but the catalogue is broader than that. The Ark have released four studio albums and an EP: Racing with the Rabbits (1996), We Are The Ark (2000), In Lust We Trust (2002), State of the Ark (2004) and Prayer for the Weekend (2007). On top of that came one more album towards the end of their first era.
The lyrics have also always had an edge. Several of the songs carry social commentary, such as the single "Father of a Son" from 2002, which takes a stand for the right of same-sex couples to adopt children and reflected Salo's own experiences in the middle of a Swedish debate about family law. It's worth remembering that Salo was provocative long before The Ark broke through. As early as 1991 the frontman shocked Sweden by stepping out in a catsuit at the age of fourteen and declaring himself bisexual.
One more thing many people forget: Salo's voice reaches far beyond rock. In 2008 he translated Andrew Lloyd Webber's Jesus Christ Superstar into Swedish for a production in Malmö, where he himself played the role of Jesus. That theatrical streak is evident even at an ordinary rock concert.
Practical: tickets and where to find the concerts
Short version: buy through official channels and book early. The Ark's name sells fast, and sought-after shows sell out.
Since dates and venues are released in batches, it's wise to monitor releases actively rather than searching after the fact. Always buy through the band's own channels and established ticket agents, and be careful with second-hand sales at inflated prices. When it comes to The Ark concerts the same applies as for all major acts: the most central shows are the ones that go fastest.
With us we continuously gather live events from across the country. If The Ark don't have dates out right now, or you want to fill the calendar with more music in the meantime, you'll find plenty of alternatives. In Jönköping, for example, the concert series LUNCHKONSERTER 26/27 starts on 21 August 2026 and SÖNDAGSKONSERTER 26/27 from 30 August 2026, both at Konsertsalen i Spira. For those who prefer to keep a broad overview, our concert overview is the best starting point, and if you're looking for the summer's big events there are also festivals in Stockholm to browse.
