The Neighbourhood Stockholm: the band behind Sweater Weather is back
The name might mean nothing to you. But that song from your TikTok feed, a cool guitar riff and a voice mumbling about pulling down sweater sleeves, that one has definitely stuck around. Behind Sweater Weather are five guys who grew up in Newbury Park outside Los Angeles, and the strange thing is that their entire career rests on a guitar riff that Zach Abels wore down at home in his mom's house, just before he was about to graduate. When Jesse Rutherford asked if he could record him playing the loop, Abels simply said yes, without any plans for it whatsoever. Now searches for The Neighbourhood Stockholm are rising again, because the band is back on stage after several quiet years.
The point of this guide is simple. You'll understand why a song over ten years old is still climbing the charts, what happened during the band's silence, and exactly what you need to know if you want to catch a show in Sweden.
The Neighbourhood Stockholm: what you need to know ahead of a Sweden visit
The Neighbourhood is out on tour again after the comeback, and that is why interest in The Neighbourhood Stockholm is growing. Exact dates, venue and tickets are always confirmed via the band's and the promoter's official channels, so that is where you should keep an eye out well in advance.
After three years away, the band announced in autumn 2025 that they were back, released a new album and announced a world tour with shows both in the US and abroad. Tickets for the American dates sold out quickly, and several venues were gone in a short time. If you want to see them live, the same rule applies as with any hot tour: only buy through official ticket sellers, never through resale sites with inflated prices. If you want to see what else is happening in the capital, you'll find everything in our events calendar, and the live evenings we cover are gathered under concerts.
Sweater Weather: the song that refuses to die
Sweater Weather is the engine of the band's entire story. It slowly moved from old Tumblr aesthetics to viral TikTok trends, and has climbed back up the charts time and again.
The road there was far from straightforward. The song was written by Jesse Rutherford, Zach Abels and Jeremy Freedman and became the single that launched the debut album I Love You. from 2013. According to Abels, it started taking shape while he was still in high school, and it was actually the very first song the band ever wrote together. Rutherford recorded the loop, built a beat around it and added vocals. When they were done they realised they had something real, and that was how the idea to keep going was born. Rutherford has since said that the song itself came to life after a serious argument on the car ride home from the studio.
Commercially, things were slow at first. The band put Sweater Weather and Female Robbery online without so much as a press photo or a biography, and the British spelling led most people to believe they were an English band. But the song kept spreading, and eventually it reached number one on Billboard's Alternative Airplay in June 2013, where it stayed for a total of eleven weeks at the top. It took almost a year before it broke through on the broader Billboard Hot 100, where it ultimately peaked at number 14 and stayed there for 37 weeks. It remains the band's only entry on that chart.
Then came the second wave. During the latter part of 2020 the song gained new momentum thanks to TikTok, and the same happened with Daddy Issues. The numbers that followed are almost unreal today: streams passed 2.1 billion on Spotify and views reached 1.7 billion on YouTube, and in 2023 it was awarded the RIAA's diamond certification for over ten million units sold, as one of only 106 songs to have crossed that threshold. And it keeps growing. When Spotify celebrated its 20th anniversary in April 2026 and published its list of the most streamed songs of all time, Sweater Weather came in third place, behind The Weeknd's Blinding Lights and Ed Sheeran's Shape of You.
Black and white for a reason: the aesthetic and the sound
The Neighbourhood is as much a visual idea as it is a band. Everything is in black and white, and behind that colour choice lies a concrete and human explanation.
First, there is the matter of the name, which confuses many people. The members chose the British spelling of neighbourhood on the advice of their manager, to distinguish themselves from another band that was already using the American version. That is why their song titles are also written in the British style, and that detail led most people to assume they were from the United Kingdom. In reality they are Southern Californians through and through.
The finest detail is hidden in the colourlessness itself. The black and white clouds on the cover of I Love You., the ones so many associate with Sweater Weather, reflect Jesse Rutherford's red-green colour blindness. It is not about style for style's sake, but about a way of showing the world roughly as the frontman actually sees it. He later pushed the idea even further. Ahead of the album Chip Chrome & the Mono-Tones in 2020 he stepped into the alter ego Chip Chrome, a silver-painted figure dressed in sequins.
Musically they are harder to place than you might expect. The sound is a blend of atmospheric indie rock, electronics and hip-hop-influenced beats with melodic, R&B-tinged vocals. Beyond the big seller there is a whole catalogue of familiar tracks, among them Afraid, Daddy Issues, Softcore, You Get Me So High, Reflections and The Beach. The hiatus and the comeback
The Neighbourhood was gone for several years, and the comeback is the entire reason it is possible to talk about a show at all again. The road back was not entirely painless.
In November 2021, after ten years together, the band decided to go on an indefinite hiatus, and the announcement went out on Instagram in February 2022. The explanation was a human one: as they entered their thirties they encountered life outside the band bubble for the first time, with breakups, family troubles and personal challenges. The situation became more complicated in November 2022, when drummer Brandon Fried left the band after María Zardoya of The Marías publicly accused him of sexual misconduct. Fried acknowledged it and linked it to problems with alcohol and drugs.
In the meantime the frontman went his own way. Jesse Rutherford pursued a solo career under the name Jesse®, signed to Atlantic Records and released several records on his own. He also appeared as vocalist in the hardcore band Valley Girl, a sharp stylistic departure from The Neighbourhood's muted alternative sound, and during this period became celebrity gossip fodder after a brief relationship with Billie Eilish.
Then came the turn fans had been hoping for. The band reunited in the studio in November 2024, and at the end of August 2025 they confirmed on Instagram that they were back, with all original members, including Fried. The drummer's return was met with criticism from part of the fanbase, something the band acknowledged in their statement. In October 2025 a new album followed, titled (((((ultraSOUND))))), preceded by the singles OMG, Lovebomb and Private. At the same time the tenth anniversary of Wiped Out! was celebrated with an expanded edition. With new music and a world tour in place, live life is in full swing again.
How much stage experience they have
This is not a beginner band heading out on tour. The Neighbourhood has played big stages since their breakthrough year, and that experience shows in how they build an evening.
As early as the summer and autumn of 2013 they toured as support for Imagine Dragons, and that same year they played Coachella. During 2013 they also appeared at festivals such as Edgefest and Osheaga in Canada as well as Music Midtown in Atlanta. With a catalogue spanning from the debut album I Love You. through Wiped Out! from 2015 to Chip Chrome & the Mono-Tones and the new material, there is plenty of familiar music to draw from. Which songs end up in the setlist is decided by the band from night to night, but Sweater Weather is for obvious reasons the song the audience is waiting for.
If you want to prepare ahead of a potential show, the debut and Wiped Out! are a good starting point, and the new album shows where the band stands today. If you want to keep track of the full range of live music and major events in the capital, you can also check out festivals in Stockholm.
