Makoto Shinkai (born 1973) is a Japanese animation director and co-founder of CoMix Wave Films, best known for visually striking films that explore longing and distance between people. His 2016 romantic fantasy Your Name became one of the highest-grossing anime films ever made, and he followed it with Weathering with You (2019) and Suzume (2022), cementing his place as one of Japan's most commercially successful filmmakers.
