BCUC from Soweto brings a powerful sound where funk, hip-hop, and punk converge in spiritual concerts at Debaser Strand.
BCUC (Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness) is a seven-piece band from Soweto, South Africa, formed in 2003. They call their sound 'indigenous funky soul' - a collision of Afro-psychedelic rhythms, punk energy and traditional Soweto percussion that the New York Times described as bringing 'punk-rock energy and hypnotic rhythms to social activism'. Their live shows carry a political and spiritual charge that has earned them festival stages from Glastonbury to Roskilde, and the 2023 WOMEX Artist Award.
BCUC released their fifth album 'The Road Is Never Easy' on Outhere Records on 3 April 2026, their debut on the label and their first record with 10 full songs.
Far Out Magazine gave 'The Road Is Never Easy' 4 out of 5 stars, praising BCUC's blend of punk aggression, African folk and Caribbean rhythms.
BCUC released the first single 'Higher Vibes' from the new album on 16 January 2026, followed by 'Amakhandela' in February and 'Umdumakhanda' in March.
BCUC embarked on a European and UK tour running from April through July 2026 in support of the new album.
BCUC received the 2023 WOMEX Artist Award, an honour typically given to more established artists, recognising their live performances and body of work.
