Cillian Murphy (born 25 May 1976 in Cork, Ireland) is an Irish actor who rose to international prominence as Tommy Shelby in the BBC crime drama Peaky Blinders (2013-2022) and as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's 2023 blockbuster Oppenheimer. His performance in Oppenheimer earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor - the first Irish-born actor to win in that category - as well as a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. Beyond acting, he co-founded the production company Big Things Films and has increasingly shaped the projects he appears in.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the feature-film continuation of the TV series with Murphy reprising Tommy Shelby, was released globally on Netflix on 20 March 2026 after a theatrical premiere on 6 March, drawing 25.3 million views in its first three days on the platform.
Murphy's Netflix drama Steve, in which he plays a headteacher at a boys' reform school and which he also produced through his company Big Things Films, began streaming on 3 October 2025 after a Toronto Film Festival premiere.
Murphy entered negotiations to star alongside Daniel Craig in an untitled prison drama written and directed by Damien Chazelle for Paramount Pictures.
Murphy presented the Best Actor award at the 97th Academy Awards on 2 March 2025, one year after winning the same prize for Oppenheimer.
Murphy won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Oppenheimer at the 96th Academy Awards, becoming the first Irish-born actor to win in that category.
