Fidelio is Ludwig van Beethoven's only opera, first performed in Vienna in 1805 and revised to its final form in 1814. It follows Leonore, who disguises herself as a young man to free her unjustly imprisoned husband Florestan. The work is widely regarded as one of opera's great statements on freedom and justice.
