François Truffaut was a French film director and a central figure of the French New Wave movement in the late 1950s and 1960s. His debut feature "Les 400 coups" (1959), partly drawn from his own childhood, became one of the defining works of world cinema. He went on to direct films such as "Jules et Jim" and "La nuit américaine".
