George Michael (born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou, 25 June 1963 - 25 December 2016) was an English singer-songwriter and record producer who first broke through as one half of Wham! before building one of the defining solo careers of the 1980s and 90s. His 1987 debut album Faith won the Grammy for Album of the Year and spent 12 weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200; over his lifetime he sold more than 120 million records worldwide. Beyond the music, Michael was a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and AIDS awareness, and his catalogue has continued to attract new listeners long after his death.
