Heath Andrew Ledger (4 April 1979 - 22 January 2008) was an Australian actor who built a career spanning 20 films across independent and major studio productions. He earned global recognition for his role as Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain (2005) and, posthumously, for his portrayal of the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight (2008) - a performance that won him the Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor.
