About

Horsegirl is a Chicago-bred indie rock trio - Penelope Lowenstein (guitar, vocals), Nora Cheng (guitar, vocals) and Gigi Reece (drums) - who formed in 2019 while still in high school. Their 2022 Matador Records debut 'Versions of Modern Performance', recorded at Chicago's Electrical Audio with producer John Agnello, drew wide critical praise for its 90s-rooted noise-pop and slacker-rock sound. The band relocated to New York after the debut, then returned to Chicago in January 2024 to record their second album 'Phonetics On and On' (February 2025), produced by Cate Le Bon, which marked a shift toward a more minimalist, spacious sound.
