Jan Troell is a Swedish film director, born in 1931, known for his careful craftsmanship and his portrayals of ordinary people's lives. He directed the acclaimed epic Utvandrarna and its sequel Nybyggarna (1972), both adapted from Vilhelm Moberg's novels about Swedish emigrants to America.
