Jeff Buckley (1966-1997) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Anaheim, California, whose four-octave voice set him apart from virtually every other artist of his generation. His sole studio album, Grace (1994), drew on rock, jazz, folk and soul in equal measure - and his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has since become one of the most celebrated recordings in popular music. Buckley drowned in the Wolf River, a tributary of the Mississippi, on 29 May 1997, aged 30, leaving behind a legacy that has only grown in the decades since.
Jeff Buckley was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2026.
