Maggie Gyllenhaal (born November 16, 1977 in New York City) is an American actress and filmmaker who broke through with Secretary (2002) and went on to win a Golden Globe for the BBC miniseries The Honourable Woman (2014). She has since moved decisively behind the camera: her directorial debut The Lost Daughter (2021) earned three Oscar nominations, and her second feature The Bride! (2026) - a gothic reimagining of Frankenstein starring Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley - was released by Warner Bros. Her father is of Swedish descent, making the Gyllenhaal name a genuine piece of Swedish aristocratic heritage.
Gyllenhaal received the President's Award at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (July 3-11, 2026), 20 years after winning the festival's best actress prize for Sherrybaby.
Warner Bros. optioned Rachel Kushner's novel Creation Lake for Gyllenhaal to write, direct and produce as her next feature.
The Bride! (2026), Gyllenhaal's gothic Frankenstein reimagining starring Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale, was released by Warner Bros. and grossed $24 million worldwide on a $90 million budget.
The Bride! had its world premiere at the Empire Leicester Square in London on February 26, 2026.
Gyllenhaal's daughter Ramona was among those arrested at a Columbia University protest against Israel's war in Gaza in May 2025.
