Moor Mother is the stage name of Camae Ayewa, an American poet, musician, and activist from Philadelphia whose work spans experimental hip-hop, noise, free jazz, and spoken word. She has released nine solo albums - from the acclaimed debut Fetish Bones (2016) to The Great Bailout (2024) - and co-leads the free-jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements. Ayewa is also an Assistant Professor of Composition at the USC Thornton School of Music and a 2024 Chanel Next Prize winner.
Moor Mother released The Film, a full collaborative album with post-metal band Sumac, on Thrill Jockey Records on April 25, 2025.
The Film received a Metacritic score of 82/100, drawing strong reviews from outlets including Paste, Mojo, and Sputnikmusic.
Ayewa was named a winner of the 2024 Chanel Next Prize, a biennial award given to ten contemporary artists worldwide, carrying a €100,000 grant.
Moor Mother released The Great Bailout, her ninth studio album, in March 2024; the record centres on the UK's 1837 Slave Compensation Act and its colonial legacy.
