Gotland Chamber Music Festival
Gotland Chamber Music Festival brings together international classical musicians during week 30. The festival opens with a piano evening featuring Staffan Scheja and cellist Antonio Roland.
Staffan Scheja (born 1950, Danderyd) is a Swedish pianist and professor who made his concert debut at fourteen with Herbert Blomstedt and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. After winning the top prize at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in 1975, he built a career spanning Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and major orchestras from the Munich Philharmonic to the NHK in Tokyo. He founded the Gotland Chamber Music Festival in 1986 and has long served as professor and adviser to the rector at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
Scheja performs at the 2026 Gotland Chamber Music Festival in Visby, opening with a solo piano evening at Almedalsbiblioteket on 20 July.
Scheja serves on the jury for the Jan Wallander Prize 2026, awarded annually at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
Scheja served on the jury for the Jan Wallander Prize 2025, which was awarded to violist Miranda Nordqvist on 27 March 2025.
The Gotland Chamber Music Festival celebrated its 40th edition in July 2025, with Scheja as artistic director.
