Tom Hanks (born July 9, 1956) is an American actor, filmmaker and producer whose career spans more than four decades. He won back-to-back Academy Awards for Best Actor - for Philadelphia (1993) and Forrest Gump (1994) - a feat only Spencer Tracy had achieved before him, and his films have collectively grossed over $11.7 billion worldwide. Beyond acting, he has produced landmark TV miniseries including Band of Brothers and Masters of the Air through his company Playtone.
Toy Story 5, in which Hanks reprises his role as Woody, opened to $312 million worldwide - the biggest global debut of 2026 and the second-largest animated opening weekend of all time.
Hanks executive produced and narrated the 20-part History Channel documentary series World War II with Tom Hanks, released on May 25, 2026.
Principal photography began in Sydney, Australia on Greyhound 2, the Apple TV+ sequel in which Hanks also wrote the screenplay and reprises his role as Captain Krause.
Hanks returned to the stage as both performer and playwright with This World of Tomorrow, an adaptation of his own short stories, at The Shed in New York City (October 30 - December 21, 2025).
Hanks appeared in Wes Anderson's ensemble film The Phoenician Scheme, playing Leland, a mistrustful investor.
