The programme opens with Erkki-Sven Tüür's new saxophone concerto, followed by Sibelius's Kullervo - the grand work for soloists, male choir, and orchestra that draws its subject from the Finnish national epic Kalevala.

Esa-Pekka Salonen is a Finnish conductor and composer, born in Helsinki in 1958. He served as music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for nearly two decades and has led the San Francisco Symphony since 2021. His own compositions draw on a modern orchestral language.
