The Dance of Death
Teater Dictat presents Strindberg's The Dance of Death in autumn 2026 in an adaptation by British dramaturg and director Matthew Short. The premiere takes place at Varbergs Teater on 28 August, followed by tour performances in September.
In this version, the play's story is set in a dystopian future where the climate crisis has accelerated into an immediate threat. The famous marriage is queered into a gay couple within the colonial ruling class on a fictional Scottish island. The adaptation was written in English and then translated back into Swedish - with the original only in the background - and is characterized by ecodramaturgy, a queer approach, and care for minority culture.
The production is created in collaboration with the Scottish Perth Theatre, where an English version is planned for spring 2027 with a partially overlapping ensemble. Direction, dramaturgy, adaptation and concept: Matthew Short. Artistic direction, translation and performance: Johan Svensson.
