In 1781, Empress Catherine the Great forcibly deported around 1,000 Swedish peasants from Dagö in Estonia to an area near Crimea in present-day Ukraine. Half of the villagers died during the journey to their new settlement - mostly the elderly and children. Within a few years of arrival, only 135 people remained.
Over the decades, longing for Sweden grew stronger, but it was not until 1929 that the villagers finally got to move home. The story of Gammalsvenskby is about a people who, despite trial after trial, preserve hope for a better future.
The performance is presented by Katarina Söderlund (narrator, vocals, cello) and Alva Granström (narrator, vocals, violin). It is based on an idea by Katarina Söderlund, with script adaptation and direction by Johan Theodorsson. The music is partly drawn from the Swedish villagers themselves, partly newly composed.
