Women and Apple Trees

Sally and Ellen grow up in a poor neighbourhood of Norrköping at the end of the 19th century. Meeting again as adults, they find in each other a rare strength. Ellen is the quiet, enduring mother struggling in a destructive marriage. Sally is righteous and fearless - a woman who speaks loudly even when no one wants to listen. Around them, children move through a daily life marked by hardship, loss, and moments of belonging.

Moa Martinson's 1933 novel portrays women's living conditions with an unusually direct gaze, in language rooted in earth, labour, and survival. It is a story of how women carried their lives and each other - of sisterhood as resistance and friendship as necessity in a world where safety was rarely to be found. Now the novel comes to life on stage in an adaptation by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord.
