A Dutch Apothecary's Rubbish Pit — Göteborgs stadsmuseum, Gothenburg

When Göteborg was founded in 1621, the Swedish crown wanted to secure its access to world trade. Amsterdam was then Europe's trading hub, and the crown attracted Dutch trading houses to the new city with tax-free trade for the first 15 years. It worked - Göteborg gained a significant Dutch population in its early years, which also shaped the city.

Archaeologists Johan Thörnqvist and Tom Wennberg from Göteborg City Museum discuss finds from a rubbish pit belonging to a Dutch citizen in Göteborg. The material contains an unusually high proportion of objects of Dutch origin, and the specialist ceramics among the finds suggest that the property owner was an apothecary by profession.
