Food, Power and Resistance in New Lödöse — Göteborgs stadsmuseum, Gothenburg

The 16th century was a time of great discoveries, religious upheaval, war and famine - and a period when inequality in society increased. Food culture reflected the growing divide, but was also an arena for ideology and resistance.

Archaeology doctoral student Emma Maltin at Stockholm University explores food culture in Gothenburg's predecessor, New Lödöse (1473-1624), and at Old Älvsborg Castle. Her dissertation "Recipes of Resistance. Food, Inequality, and Ideology in Western Sweden 1473-1624" forms the basis for this lecture. Maltin discusses royal banquets, subsistence food and crop failures, as well as traces of resistance through poaching and smuggling. She also shows how Catholic fasting rules became politically and ideologically charged after the Reformation.

The lecture is included in the museum's admission ticket. Seating is limited - book via the link or contact info@fornminnesföreningen-gbg.se if you are a member of Fornminnesföreningen. Arrive at least 5 minutes before the start, otherwise your seat may be released if there is a queue. Cancellations are made via bokningar.stadsmuseet@kultur.goteborg.se.
