Queer Wednesday: Who was Kai Roger Idhem?
Göteborgs stadsmuseum, Gothenburg
Ingår i entrébiljett. Fri entré för alla under 20 år
Is transgender identity as new a phenomenon as many seem to think, and how can we understand LGBTQI life stories that belong to the past?
When Michael began researching his stepfather's family history, he discovered that a priest had crossed out a girl's name and written Kai Roger instead. At first it seemed like a clerical error - but the birth register shows that at age 24, Kai was changed from female to male in the church records. This happened 25 years before Sweden passed a gender identity law that allowed intersex and transgender people to change their legal sex.
In the lecture, Michael Schröder discusses what can be learned through genealogical research and how to conduct it. He also reflects on whether it is right to dig into the past. Michael Schröder is a trained radio journalist based in Göteborg who has been researching family history since 2017.
