A Society Within Society - Social Life at the Shipyards — Sjöfartsmuseet Akvariet, Gothenburg

The Shipyard History Association of Göteborg discusses the social bonds and organization at the shipyards. Speakers include Hans Nilsson and Kjell Ring.

In the 19th-century mechanical workshops - the predecessors of the shipyards - working hours were 69 hours spread across six days, with no job security and virtually no social safety net. Yet from that community something emerged: trade union organization, worker protection, funds for pensions and health insurance. The cooperative society and motorcycle club gave workers access to cheaper goods and holiday facilities. Children's camps and workplace sports developed - all aimed at creating a safer workplace and a more livable environment.

The programme is included in the admission ticket but places are limited. Arrive at least 10 minutes before the start - otherwise your place may be reserved if there is a queue. Unbooked places are released until the programme begins.
