Destroy This Play

Sam begins to suspect that life isn't real - that everyone around him is following a script that no one wanted to share. At home, at school, among friends: everything feels rehearsed. Then the Play itself speaks up and confirms Sam's suspicions. The roles are assigned, the lines are fixed. But Sam is also given a choice: play along, or tear it all to pieces.

The performance starts in traditional theatrical form and then dissolves into deliberate chaos, where metatheatre and humour are used to overturn the rules and expectations of the adult world. The question driving the story forward is simple but not easy: what happens if you take control of your own story?

The play is written and directed by Emil Nilsson-Mäki, founder of Skuggteatern in Umeå. His previous works - including Gargantua, I am not a girl and Lyssnaren - have been shown at festivals such as Bibu and Scenkonstbiennalen. Set design and costumes: Hanna Cecilia W Lindkvist.
