Moa Martinson's 1933 novel takes us to the poor quarters of Norrköping at the end of the 19th century, where Sally and Ellen grow up and later, as adults, find their way back to each other. Ellen endures a destructive marriage through silence - her own way of surviving. Sally chooses a different path - she speaks plainly, even when those around her would rather not hear it. Around them, children move through a daily life of hard work, loss, and moments of togetherness.
The novel portrays women's living conditions in language rooted in earth and labour, and its social pathos remains relevant. Nearly a hundred years later, Tora von Platen dramatizes it under the direction of Julia Marko-Nord, with Emilia Roosmann, Tuuli Heinonen, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson and Emil Grudemo El Hayek on stage.
