Women and Apple Trees — Jarl Kullescenen, Ängelholm

Moa Martinson's 1933 novel takes us to the poor quarters of Norrköping in the late 19th century, where Sally and Ellen grow up and later, as adults, find their way back to each other. Ellen endures a destructive marriage through silence - her way of surviving. Sally chooses a different path - she speaks plainly, regardless of whether anyone listens. Around them, children move through a daily life of hard work, loss, and moments of togetherness.

The novel portrays women's living conditions in language rooted in earth and labour. Its social pathos has not diminished over the years. It is about sisterhood as a counterforce and friendship as pure necessity when security is a luxury most lack.

Now the book is dramatised by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord in a co-production with Västerbottensteatern. The cast includes Emilia Roosmann, Tuuli Heinonen, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson and Emil Grudemo El Hayek. Set and costume design: Sven Haraldsson. Composition: Martin Hederos. Mask design: Angelica Ekeberg. Lighting design: Sofia Linde and Hannele Philipson. Dramaturge: Ninna Tersman. Performance length: 2 hours including interval.
