Seppuku
A guest performance by Angélica Liddell.
Spanish artist Angélica Liddell centers her performance on Japanese writer Yukio Mishima (1925-1970) and the samurai ritual of seppuku - also known as harakiri. The starting point is a movement toward the place where beauty, eroticism, and death meet.
The performance takes the form of a farewell poem: pain and beauty are woven together, and death is viewed through an extreme will to live. With a humorous touch, Liddell loosens the theatrical machinery from its role as entertainer and moralizer, seeking to return theatre to ritual rather than spectacle.
The first part of SEPPUKU. EL FUNERAL DE MISHIMA unfolds outside the stage - an appeal for the clothes of the dead, to receive and honor them. On stage follows a ritual for the dead and the living, where Liddell, together with Japanese stage artists - long her companions - sets death against desire and beauty, and life against its finitude.
Angélica Liddell has previously performed at Dramaten with Dämon - El funeral de Bergman and Liebestod. The company expresses its gratitude to all who have contributed to the work by donating clothes that belonged to their loved ones.
