The story is based on Selma Lagerlöf's novel: the cavaliers at the Ekeby ironworks make a wager with the devil to run the mill for an entire year without accomplishing anything useful. Only feasting and adventure matter. Yet it turns out that a year of excess is enough to threaten the entire region's livelihood - and when the year ends, the cavaliers have been transformed into conscientious workers.
