Vernissage: Ilona Sagar: Architecture of Care — Röhsska museet, Gothenburg

Paimio Sanatorium, designed by Aino Marsio-Aalto (1894-1949) and Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), is one of Northern Europe's most celebrated modernist buildings. The Aalto couple conceived it as a "medical instrument" - light, ventilation, and heating were adapted to the needs of the reclining patient rather than the standing visitor. The building is also renowned for its bold colour palette: green, blue, red, orange, and yellow.

The exhibition Architecture of Care centres on London-based artist and filmmaker Ilona Sagar's work Other Actors, in which doctors, nurses, and facility managers share their own perspectives on the sanatorium. The work is presented alongside around twenty design objects and archival materials. The exhibition is designed by designer Adrien Rovero.

A site-specific sloping sofa invites visitors to assume the horizontal position that underpins the entire architectural concept. Ilona Sagar's practice moves between moving image, text, performance, and installation, grounded in archival research and interdisciplinary collaboration. She investigates how public and social identities are shaped through systems connected to health, technology, and the body.
