Violet Green Tell it like it is

For over a decade, Violet Green has toured with a show celebrating the great female divas of rock and blues. The motto of the classic blues divas was: Tell it like it is! - they broke taboos and protested with dark humor against injustice and oppression, inspiring musicians for over a hundred years.

The performance moves from a smoky piano bar in the American South and vaudeville artists' tent shows, through 1950s rhythm and blues, to Janis Joplin and Mavis Staples. The connecting thread is a music history featuring pioneers such as Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton, Ethel Waters, Etta James, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith, Janis Joplin, and Aretha Franklin.
