Russian Prisoners of War in Sweden

Lecture by Håkan Henriksson on Russian prisoners of war in Sweden during the Great Northern War (1700-1721).

During the war, Swedish forces captured over 15,000 prisoners of war who were brought to Sweden. Most were Danes, Saxons, and Russians, but among them were also Poles, Ukrainians, Norwegians, Lithuanians, Englishmen, Dutchmen, Tatars, and Kalmyks.

The lecture explores how they were captured and transported, how they were treated, where they lived, what work they performed, and how they interacted with the local population - in short, what life was like as a prisoner of war in Sweden.
