A Romanian-Norwegian couple, Mihai and Lisbeth Gheorghiu, move to Norway with their children following the death of Mihai's parents, seeking to be closer to Lisbeth's family - who share the couple's deep religious convictions.

Soon they form a close bond with their neighbours, the Halberg family. Mats Halberg is headmaster of the nearby school, while his wife Mia has left her career as a lawyer to care for Mats's aging father. As the friendship deepens, the family's rebellious teenage daughter Rakel begins to change, and when the Gheorghiu family's daughter Elia appears at school with bruises, suspicions arise about what is happening behind closed doors. The two families find themselves in an escalating conflict over parenting, faith, and freedom.
