In the hope of creating a better life, 6-year-old Maja and her parents leave Yugoslavia for Denmark, leaving behind Maja’s two older brothers with the promise they will join once the family is settled. But the new country proves difficult and unfamiliar, and the family struggles to adapt to a new language, culture, and way of life. As the years pass, Maja grows up and becomes a successful artist in Denmark, yet beneath her achievements, she carries a divide of joy, sorrow, and gratitude—torn between the life she has built and the painful sacrifices her parents made for their future.

Claes Bang was born on April 28, 1967 in Denmark as Claes Kasper Bang. He is an actor, known for The Square (2017), The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018) and Bron/Broen (2011). He is married to Lis Kasper Bang. He graduated from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in 1996.
Zlatko Burić is a Croatian-born actor who has built his career mainly in Denmark and Sweden. He is best known for his parts in Lars von Trier's films, including Dancer in the Dark and Nymphomaniac, and has appeared in numerous Scandinavian productions since the 1990s.
