The Script Gothenburg: the evening at Ullevi 4 July 2026
The name might mean nothing to you, but the chorus "standing in the hall of fame" is one you will almost certainly recognise from the radio. Behind it is an Irish band whose two founders first drove in a boy band put together by Louis Walsh (the man behind Westlife), and who later sat in a studio in Los Angeles writing a song for Britney Spears. When people search for The Script Gothenburg they are looking for Ullevi on 4 July 2026, and there is a point many miss: the Irish band were not actually the headline act that evening. They took the stage as special guests, and that story is at least as interesting as the hits.
The Script Gothenburg: everything about the show at Ullevi
The Script Gothenburg refers to Ullevi on 4 July 2026, where the band were one of three guest artists on country star Luke Combs's big arena evening. Tickets were released in autumn 2025 via Live Nation.
The headline act that evening was not the Irish band. The concert was part of Luke Combs's world tour My Kinda Saturday Night Tour, and it was the country artist's first show in Gothenburg. On stage with The Script were Ty Myers and The Castellows as special guests. If you searched for The Script Gothenburg and wondered why it was hard to find a standalone ticket for them specifically, that is the explanation: they were part of a larger programme.
The practicalities of the evening followed Ullevi's usual setup. Tickets were released on Friday 17 October 2025 at 10 o'clock via Live Nation, and if you bought on the secondary market there was always a risk of inflated prices and invalid tickets, as with all major arena evenings. The concert evening got under way around 18:00 with The Castellows, doors opened at 17:00 and the whole thing wrapped up around midnight. Ullevi is Sweden's largest outdoor arena with room for up to 75,000 people during concerts, so The Script faced a considerably larger audience than on a regular headline club tour.
From a Louis Walsh boy band to Dublin and London
The Script are an Irish pop and rock band formed in Dublin in 2001 who broke through internationally with their self-titled debut album in 2008. The road there went via a boy band and several years as songwriters in the USA.
The core of the band is the friendship between vocalist Danny O'Donoghue and guitarist Mark Sheehan, who have been best friends since the age of twelve and previously played in the boy band Mytown, formed in 1996. That group has a detail that says something about Irish pop exports: it was put together by the same Louis Walsh who later built Westlife. Sheehan also had an unusual entry into music. He started as a dancer and taught hip-hop steps at Dublin's Digges Lane centre for performing arts before becoming a guitarist.
After Mytown the duo moved to Los Angeles and worked as songwriters and producers. During those years they wrote and produced for artists including Britney Spears, Boyz II Men and TLC, before moving back to Dublin and recruiting drummer Glen Power for their new band. The breakthrough came in the London era: the band signed to the Sony imprint Phonogenic, released the debut single "We Cry" and then broke through with the album The Script in August 2008, which went straight to number one in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.
From there it kept rolling. The three following albums Science & Faith (2010), #3 (2012) and No Sound Without Silence (2014) all topped the album charts in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and Science & Faith reached third place in the USA. Up to the compilation album in 2021 the band had sold over seven million albums worldwide, a figure that makes them one of Ireland's most successful music exports of the 2010s.
The songs the audience can sing along to
Even someone who does not think they know The Script can probably recall more of their songs than expected. The catalogue is built for singalongs, which suits an arena like Ullevi.
The foundation was laid early with "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" and "Breakeven" from the debut. The real mega-hit, however, was "Hall of Fame" from the third album #3, recorded in Los Angeles and made in the company of an unexpected guest. The song features vocals from will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas, became the band's most successful single and topped the charts in a number of countries while being certified platinum multiple times, including in Sweden.
The connection with will.i.am stretched further than a guest verse. During the years in Los Angeles he called and asked for a song for Britney Spears's album Britney Jean from 2013, and O'Donoghue and Sheehan were involved in writing "Now That I Found You". The vocalist had by that point become a television face in his own right. Danny O'Donoghue sat as a coach on The Voice UK during the first two seasons, before leaving the show in July 2013 to focus on the band. Beyond the big hits the catalogue was built from radio-friendly singles such as "For the First Time", "Nothing" and "Superheroes".
After Mark Sheehan: the band today
The Script who stood on the Ullevi stage are not the same trio who broke through. The band went through their toughest period after co-founder Mark Sheehan passed away, and today stand at a new stage with two additions on stage.
On 14 April 2023 Mark Sheehan died in hospital after a short illness, aged 46. The news came barely a year after he had missed the American leg of the 2022 tour, something O'Donoghue later explained as being for family reasons. After a period of reflection the remaining members chose to continue. In May 2024 Danny O'Donoghue and Glen Power announced that long-standing touring member Ben Sargeant and newcomer Ben Weaver would join as bassist and lead guitarist respectively, as they felt that as a trio it would never be the same.
The new chapter had an album to carry it. The seventh studio album Satellites was released on 16 August 2024, preceded by the single "Both Ways", which was the band's first since Sheehan's death. And they have not slowed down. Following the Satellites World Tour 2025 the band announced the album The User's Guide to Being Human and the tour Man In The Arena Tour, starting in November. In short, a band came to Gothenburg carrying a great legacy while actively writing its next chapter.
How to get to Ullevi
An arena evening at Ullevi requires a little more planning than a club show, especially when capacity is close to sold out. Most things are sorted with public transport and the right bag.
Ullevi is centrally located, roughly ten minutes' walk from Gothenburg Central Station. The nearest tram and bus stops are called Ullevi Södra and Ullevi Norra, and Västtrafik's journey planner shows the quickest route. The bag rules are worth checking in advance: only bags smaller than 40 x 40 x 20 cm are allowed in, and larger bags can be left at the bag storage along Levgrensvägen for 60 kronor per item. Also bear in mind that the whole of Ullevi and the event area around the arena is smoke-free, and that you cannot go out to smoke and then come back in. Dress for a Swedish July evening, which can be warm in the sun and considerably cooler once it has gone down.
