Aretha Franklin (1942-2018) was an American singer, songwriter and pianist from Memphis, Tennessee, raised in Detroit, whose gospel-rooted voice made her the defining figure of soul and R&B. After signing with Atlantic Records in 1966, she released a string of landmark albums and earned the title 'Queen of Soul'. She won 18 Grammy Awards, was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (1987), and sold over 75 million records worldwide.
