Soweto Gospel Choir presents their new production JOY! - a celebration of traditional South African gospel, spirituals, and freedom songs at Draken Live.
Soweto Gospel Choir is a South African gospel ensemble founded in 2002 by David Mulovhedzi and Beverly Bryer, drawing its 30-plus members from churches across the Johannesburg township of Soweto. The choir has won three Grammy Awards - for the albums Blessed (2007), African Spirit (2008) and Freedom (2019) - and performed at landmark events including the 2009 Academy Awards, the FIFA World Cup opening ceremony and Nelson Mandela's funeral. Their repertoire spans African gospel, freedom songs, spirituals and international classics, sung in multiple South African languages.
Soweto Gospel Choir is currently on a European tour spanning 4 countries with 12 upcoming concerts, including a Stockholm date at Nya Cirkus on 6 November 2026.
The choir announced a New Zealand tour for March-April 2026, performing in Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch with their new concert program.
The choir performed their 'PEACE' concert at Jesse Auditorium, University of Missouri, on 26 October 2025 as part of a North American tour.
The choir's 2025-26 touring program 'Peace' features South African freedom songs alongside music by Aretha Franklin, Harry Belafonte, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and Leonard Cohen.
Soweto Gospel Choir won their third Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for 'Freedom' at the 61st Grammy Awards, with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa publicly congratulating the choir.
