Víkingur Ólafsson Plays Bach & Beethoven
Göteborgs Konserthus, Gothenburg
Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson performs Beethoven's Piano Sonata in E major, opus 109 - one of the most analysed and celebrated piano works in history. The album of the same name quickly climbed the classical charts, and critics praise Ólafsson's clarity and contrast, his ability to play with emotion while maintaining substance.
The sonata's first movement flows from a contemplative dreamscape into a wild surge of energy; the third movement culminates in a meditation that slowly approaches profound stillness. The programme also includes works by Schubert and J.S. Bach.
"For those willing to follow him, Ólafsson opens a transcendent view onto a new world." - The Guardian
About an hour before the concert, an introduction takes place in Stora salen - approximately 30 minutes of stories about the works, the composers, and personal reflections. The introduction is included in the ticket price and offers free seating.
