The Shining - Malmö Opera Presentation

Malmö Opera presents The Shining - an opera composed by Pulitzer Prize winners Paul Moravec (music) and Mark Campbell (libretto), based on Stephen King's 1977 novel. The genre is unusual for opera: a psychological drama with creeping unease, hallucinations, and nightmarish visions.

Jack Torrance has lost his teaching job and moves with his wife Wendy and son Danny to the remote Overlook Hotel to manage it during the winter season. He hopes for peace and quiet to finish a play, overcome his alcoholism and aggression, and devote himself to his family. But the hotel harbours dark secrets. Danny, who possesses a sixth sense, is tormented by horrific visions, and Jack becomes increasingly obsessed with the hotel's bloody history - and increasingly violent. When a snowstorm makes the roads impassable and Jack destroys the only communication radio, the family is completely isolated.

Peter Kajlinger and Cornelia Beskow star in the lead roles, with Patrik Ringborg conducting. The production is directed by British director Keith Warner, who has staged over 150 operas in 20 countries. Production: Malmö Opera.
