I List och Lust

The Shining is an opera by Pulitzer Prize winners Paul Moravec (music) and Mark Campbell (libretto), based on Stephen King's 1977 novel. The work is performed by Malmö Opera with Peter Kajlinger and Cornelia Beskow in the lead roles, conducted by guest conductor Patrik Ringborg. The production is directed by British director Keith Warner, who has staged over 150 operas in 20 countries.

The story centres on Jack Torrance, who together with his wife Wendy and son Danny manages a remote mountain resort in the Rocky Mountains during the winter season. Jack hopes for peace and a fresh start, but the hotel harbours a dark history. Evil forces awaken, Danny is tormented by horrific visions, and Jack becomes increasingly unhinged. When a blizzard makes the roads impassable and the radio is destroyed, the family is completely isolated.

The opera unfolds as a psychological drama with creeping unease, hallucinations, and nightmarish visions - horror is an unusual genre in opera, but here it is treated with full seriousness.
