The Taming of the Shrew — Stora scenen, Stockholm

Shakespeare's sexist love comedy comes to Stora scenen in a new version by Farnaz Arbabi.

Sisters Katarina and Bianca are complete opposites. Bianca is a soft girl influencer with a queue of suitors who want to make her a housewife. Katarina is cocky, loud, and completely uninterested in pleasing anyone - which is a problem, because according to family rules, Bianca cannot marry before her older sister. Bianca's suitors try to find someone, anyone, brave enough to take on the untamed Katarina. Enter Petruccio, confident and mysterious. But will life after the wedding be all the sisters hoped for?

The play is loved by many but also criticized for being misogynistic and practically unplayable in our time. Director Farnaz Arbabi, who recently staged Cabaret at Stora scenen, has written a new interpretation where the 1500s meet the present day via the 1980s. Clowns move through the salon and react to what happens on stage, and 15 dancers from the Ballet Academy participate.

In the lead roles are Dramaten debutante Sara Shirpey as Katarina, known from the TV series Taelgia. Bianca is played by Maia Hansson Bergqvist and Petruccio by David Book, both recently praised for their roles in Life and Death Strömquist.
