Violet Green Tell it like it is

Violet Green has toured for over a decade with a show celebrating the great female divas of rock and blues. The motto of the classic blues divas was: Tell it like it is! - they broke taboos and protested with profanity and humor against injustice and oppression, inspiring musicians for over a hundred years.

The performance journeys through music history: from smoky piano bars in the American South and vaudeville tent shows, through 1950s rhythm and blues, to Janis Joplin, who drew inspiration from Bessie Smith in the 1960s, and Mavis Staples, who continues to tour the world. Pioneers including Memphis Minnie, Big Mama Thornton, Ethel Waters, Etta James, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Bessie Smith, Aretha Franklin and others are presented along the way.
