Two women from Norrköping's poor quarter - Sally and Ellen - are followed from childhood to adulthood in a dramatization of Moa Martinsson's 1933 novel. Ellen endures a destructive marriage, while Sally fights openly and without asking permission. Around them, children live their daily lives of hardship and loss, yet also of community.
Martinsson's prose is rooted in earth and labour, and her perspective on women's living conditions has lost little of its sharpness in nearly a hundred years. It speaks of sisterhood as a counterforce and friendship as pure necessity - of how two women carry each other when security cannot be found.
The dramatization is written by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord. The cast includes Emilia Roosmann, Tuuli Heinonen, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson and Emil Grudemo El Hayek. Set and costumes: Sven Haraldsson. Composition: Martin Hederos. Lighting design: Sofia Linde and Hannele Philipson. Mask design: Angelica Ekeberg. Dramaturge: Ninna Tersman. The production is a co-production with Västerbottensteatern and is performed at Storsjöteatern in Östersund. Duration: 2 hours including intermission.
