Performance Lecture: Dilemmas and Tragedies in Healthcare's Grey Zones

A popular science lecture with musical framing.

Susanne Lundin, professor of ethnology at Lund University, and Mats G. Hansson, professor of biomedical ethics at Uppsala University, have both researched dilemmas and risk behaviour in the shadow of the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare's grey zones. They share real examples and insights on questions that concern us all - from the opioid crisis in the USA to the debate around Ozempic in the Nordic countries.

How do we perceive the risks of new treatment methods, and are they communicated well enough? What would we do if an illegal treatment abroad is our only way out? Are we aware of how many counterfeit medicines are in circulation? The lecture also connects to the opera The Galloping Cure and the doctor Theresa Hart, whose dilemma mirrors the same dark questions - including through carousel horses that can be read as a metaphor for horse, slang for heroin.

The lecture is framed with thematically fitting music by Missy Mazzoli and others, performed by pianist Jonas Olsson and tenor Jihan Shin.
