The Cultural Heritage of Soft Drinks: Pommac, Morality and Modernity — Göteborgs stadsmuseum, Gothenburg

What do Göteborg, Pommac, free churches and colonialism have in common? More than you might think. This lecture uses bottles, labels and flavours as a gateway to stories about industrialisation, temperance, colonialism and modernity.

Martin Berntson, professor of religious studies at the University of Göteborg, examines how soft drinks became symbols of faith in the future and cultural ideals - from the free church movement's critique of alcohol to Pommac's "continental" elegance and Coca-Cola's global dominance.

The lecture is a collaboration between the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies, the Department of Literature, History of Ideas and Religion, the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Göteborg, and Göteborg City Museum. Martin Berntson is also part of the #matarv research network at the University of Göteborg.

Places are limited - book via the link and arrive at least 5 minutes before the start, otherwise your place may go to someone in the queue. The lecture is included in the museum's admission ticket. Cancellations are made via bokningar.stadsmuseet@kultur.goteborg.se. If you need a sign language interpreter, contact stadsmuseum@kultur.goteborg.se at least 14 days in advance.
