Two women from Norrköping's poor quarter - Sally and Ellen - are followed from childhood to adulthood in a dramatization of Moa Martinson's 1933 novel. Ellen endures a destructive marriage, Sally fights openly and without apology. Around them, children live their daily lives of hardship and brief moments of togetherness.
Martinson's prose is rooted in earth and labour, and her perspective on women's living conditions has lost little of its sharpness in nearly a hundred years. It concerns friendship as a survival strategy and sisterhood as the only reliable safety net in a world without security.
The dramatization is by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord. The cast includes Emilia Roosmann, Tuuli Heinonen, Maria Sundbom, Mårten Andersson and Emil Grudemo El Hayek. Set and costumes: Sven Haraldsson. Composition: Martin Hederos. Lighting design: Sofia Linde and Hannele Philipson. Dramaturgy: Ninna Tersman. Mask design: Angelica Ekeberg.
The production is a co-production with Västerbottensteatern and plays in Stora salongen at Gävle Teater. Running time: 2 hours including interval.
