Women and Apple Trees

Moa Martinson's 1933 novel takes us to the poor quarters of Norrköping at the end of the 19th century, where Sally and Ellen grow up side by side. When they meet again as adults, each carries her own burden: Ellen endures a destructive marriage, Sally speaks plainly in a world that would prefer her silence. Around them, children move through a daily life of hard work, loss, and moments of togetherness.

What Martinson captured - how friendship and sisterhood could serve as a counterforce when security was a luxury most lacked - remains deeply relevant. Now the novel is dramatized by Tora von Platen and directed by Julia Marko-Nord. The performance runs 2 hours including an intermission.
