Who Was the First "Swede"? Botvid and the Birth of the Swedish Kingdom — Utvandrarnas hus, Växjö

Author and science journalist Maja Hagerman, known from several TV documentaries, discusses her latest book Botvid. The First Swede. Botvid died in 1120 and later became a symbolic figure during the period when Sweden took shape as a Christian kingdom. In a kind of detective investigation, Hagerman traces his life and times using new research, archaeological finds, and medieval parchment manuscripts.

Utvandrarnas hus in Växjö is a museum and cultural centre dedicated to the mass Swedish emigration to America during the 19th and 20th centuries. It houses the Emigrant Register, one of the world's most comprehensive archives of Swedish emigrants, alongside permanent exhibitions tracing the lives of those who left for a new world. The centre also hosts the Vilhelm Moberg Society.
